ANNUAL TOWN ELECTION: Tuesday, March 6th

Polls are open 7:00am to 8:00pm

Your vote counts!

Selectman's Race

The Annual Town Election on Tuesday centers on candidates for Town Boards and Committees, including the election of a Selectman:

Wellesley has a five member Board of Selectmen who act as the town's executive officers and oversee all matters affecting the interest and welfare of the Town of Wellesley. Selectmen are authorized to call a Town Meeting after they have posted a warrant and also have the sole authority to request an override of Proposition 2 1/2. There are two candidates for the open three-year position:

Greg Mills, a resident since 1985, who has served as a Town Meeting Member since 1997, on Advisory Committee (2002 - 2005) and on the Community Preservation Committee since 2006.

Lewis Zafferes, a resident since 1978, who served in the Wellesley Police Department from 1995 to 2002.

The two candidates have significantly different opinions on how to best meet the needs of residents and to successfully tackle the challenges ahead. Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to learn about the candidates and vote. For comments from the candidates as reported in The Wellesley Townsman, click here.

In addition to the Selectman race, each Precinct will be electing from 10 to 14 Town Meeting Members. Familiarize yourself with the TMM candidates in your precinct, as they will represent you at the Annual Town Meeting and any special Town Meetings in the future. New Superintendent: Bella Wong

The School Committee has selected Bella Wong to be the new Superintendent of the Wellesley Public Schools, starting July 1st. Ms. Wong is currently the Assistant Superintendent of the WPS, a position she has held for seven years.

The decision was made after public interviews held the week of February 12th with the two finalists, Ms. Wong and Dr. Chris Martes, the current Superintendent of Framingham Public Schools.

The current superintendent, Dr. Matt King, will be retiring in June after 11 years with the WPS.

The Last Word

Superintendent searches across the region have been increasingly competitive and difficult, as the applicant pool of qualified candidates is small.

As a town, we are fortunate to have had our search result in the selection of a highly qualified, capable and commited individual such as Bella Wong.

The Wellesley Public Schools face enormous challenges in the coming years, ranging from major capital projects to the highest enrollment ever. We need strong leadership, strong community support, and adequate funding to achieve the goals we have established for our system.

Ms. Wong is in a position to provide the strong leadership. It remains up to us, as a Town, to provide the strong, on-going support and adequate funding to enable the school administration to be as effective and successful as possible.
